ASSESSING NEIGHBORHOOD DISORDER: VALIDATION OF A THREE-FACTOR OBSERVATIONAL SCALE
2015
AbstractThis study presents data on the development and preliminary validation of an observational scale assessing neighborhood disorder. Independent observations by trained raters of neighborhood disorder were conducted in 552 census block groups in the city of Valencia (Spain). Intraclass correlation coefficients assessing inter-rater reliability indicated fair to substantial levels of agreement among raters. Confirmatory factor analyses supported a final three-factor model scale measuring physical disorder, social disorder, and physical decay. Results for the internal consistency showed large composite reliability indices indicating good reliability for all neighborhood disorder factors.…

Theory of Neutrinos: A White Paper
2005
During 2004, four divisions of the American Physical Society commissioned a study of neutrino physics to take stock of where the field is at the moment and where it is going in the near and far future. Several working groups looked at various aspects of this vast field. The summary was published as a main report entitled ``The Neutrino Matrix'' accompanied by short 50 page versions of the report of each working group. Theoretical research in this field has been quite extensive and touches many areas and the short 50 page report provided only a brief summary and overview of few of the important points. The theory discussion group felt that it may be of value to the community to publish the e…
The NEXT path to neutrino inverse hierarchy
2018

Strain-induced improvement of retention loss in PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 films
2015
The retention behavior of nanoscale domains in PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 thin films is investigated by in-situ controlling the epitaxial strain arising from a piezoelectric substrate. The retention behavior in our sample shows strong polarity-dependence: Upward-poled domains exhibit excellent stability, whereas downward-poled domains reveal a stretched exponential decay. Reversible release of in-plane compressive strain strongly reduced the retention loss, reflected in an enhancement of the relaxation time by up to one order of magnitude. We tentatively attribute the observed behavior to a strain dependence of the built-in field at the interface to the La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 bottom electrode, with a possible …
Spectroscopy of low-spin states in $^{157}\mathrm{Dy}$: Search for evidence of enhanced octupole correlations
2019
Low-spin states of 157Dy have been studied using the JUROGAM II array, following the 155Gd ({\alpha}, 2n) reaction at a beam energy of 25 MeV. The level scheme of 157Dy has been expanded with four new bands. Rotational structures built on the [523]5/2- and [402]3/2+ neutron orbitals constitute new additions to the level scheme as do many of the inter- and intra-band transitions. This manuscript also reports the observation of cross I- to (I-1)- and I- to (I-1)+ E1 dipole transitions inter-linking structures built on the [523]5/2- (band 5) and [402]3/2+ (band 7) neutron orbitals. These interlacing band structures are interpreted as the bands of parity doublets with simplex quantum number s =…
The first large-scale shell-model calculation of the two-neutrino double beta decay of $^{76}$Ge to the excited states in $^{76}$Se
2022
Large-scale shell-model calculations were carried out for the half-lives and branching ratios of the $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay of $^{76}$Ge to the ground state and the lowest three excited states $2_1^+$, $0_2^+$ and $2_2^+$ in $^{76}$Se. In total, the wave functions of more than 10,000 intermediate $1^+$ states in $^{76}$As were calculated in a three-step procedure allowing an efficient use of the available computer resources. In the first step, 250 lowest states, below some 5 MeV of excitation energy, were calculated without truncations within a full major shell $0f_{5/2}-1p-0g_{9/2}$ for both protons and neutrons. The wave functions of the rest of the states, up to some 30 MeV, were compute…
Isomeric fission yield ratios for odd-mass Cd and In isotopes using the Phase-Imaging Ion-Cyclotron-Resonance technique
2018
Isomeric yield ratios for the odd-$A$ isotopes of $^{119-127}$Cd and $^{119-127}$In from 25-MeV proton-induced fission on natural uranium have been measured at the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap, by employing the Phase-Imaging Ion-Cyclotron-Resonance technique. With the significantly improved mass resolution of this novel method isomeric states separated by 140 keV from the ground state, and with half-lives of the order of 500 ms, could be resolved. This opens the door for obtaining new information on low-lying isomers, of importance for nuclear structure, fission and astrophysics. In the present work the experimental isomeric yield ratios are used for the estimation of the root-mean-square a…
Evolution of Octupole Deformation in Radium Nuclei from Coulomb Excitation of Radioactive $^{222}$Ra and $^{228}$Ra Beams
2020
There is sparse direct experimental evidence that atomic nuclei can exhibit stable pear shapes arising from strong octupole correlations. In order to investigate the nature of octupole collectivity in radium isotopes, electric octupole ($E3$) matrix elements have been determined for transitions in $^{222,228}$Ra nuclei using the method of sub-barrier, multi-step Coulomb excitation. Beams of the radioactive radium isotopes were provided by the HIE-ISOLDE facility at CERN. The observed pattern of $E$3 matrix elements for different nuclear transitions is explained by describing $^{222}$Ra as pear-shaped with stable octupole deformation, while $^{228}$Ra behaves like an octupole vibrator.
